Alton is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. It is part of the Bangor, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located at 45.033502N,-68.729095W. The population was 816 at the 2000 census. The community is named after an Alton in England.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 42.8 square miles (111 km2), of which, 42.4 square miles (110 km2) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) of it (0.87%) is water.
Alton is located on State Highway 16, north of Bangor. It is west of Interstate 95.
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 816 people, 309 households, and 241 families residing in the town. The population density was 19.3 people per square mile (7.4/km²). There were 347 housing units at an average density of 8.2 per square mile (3.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.26% White, 0.12% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.12% Asian, and 0.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.49% of the population.
There were 309 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.1% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 34.8% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males.
